Tears are the liquid product of a process of crying to clean and lubricate the eyes. The word lacrimation (from L. Lacrima meaning Tear) (also spelled lachrymation) may also be used in a medical or literary sense to refer to crying. Strong emotions, such as sorrow or elation, may lead to crying. The process of yawning may also result in lacrimation. Although most land mammals have a lacrimation system to keep their eyes moist and in response to other stimuli, humans are the only mammal generally accepted to cry emotional tears.

Is it possible to patch tears in a leather couch?
Q. We have a couch that has tears in the back cushions (which are attached to the couch) and it is not very feasable for me to take the entire couch to a professional shop. Does anyone know of a way I can repair the tears at home? My main concern is patching them before they get any bigger.

A. You would be better off if you could call a 'leather repair shop' that does 'patching' like this and tell them that the couch is simply 'way too heavy' to transport ... and ask them if they have someone they can 'send out' to do the repair 'properly' or have a truck that they can 'put the couch in' to take it to their shop to repair it, and then bring it back. You may have to call several places, but I've needed 'quick repairs' and have found several places that are really nice and really helpful ... generally, you'll want a place that does both 'motor vehicle leather' and also 'upholstery leather' even if what you have 'torn' is just a leather jacket.

A. Artificial tears are usually safe for long term use. Hypromellose (HPMC) can be used for long provided it's preservative free. Preservatives have bad effects in the long run on the cornea.

How do our lacrimal glands produce tears when we cry emotionally?
Q. in our anatomy and physiology class, we discussed that there is still no scientific evidence why there are tears pouring when we are upset. im wondering why and how could our glands produce so much tears? i usually cry, like a lot. so yeah, im curious.

A. Hmm, I've heard differently. Supposedly, when we cry, a certain chemical is released in the tears (salty taste) that helps alleviate the emotions in our brain. Therefore, if you're sad, and you cry, you're, in a way, crying out the sadness.
