How would you paraphrase this poem about sorrow and regrets?
Q. If there be sorrow let it be for things undone... undreamed unrealized unattained to these add one; Love withheld ...restrained Do you or do you not agree with what the poem is trying to say?

A. Save your regrets for the things about which you can still do something--the things in the future, not things from the past. And one thing you can still do now is love and be loved. No, I don't agree, not because it's not a good idea but because it's not human. You always regret your mistake. You certainly shouldn't obsess about them, but it's naive to think you'll just move on. But it's a good idea anyway, and, as expressed here, a beautiful sentiment.

What is it that causes us to feel sorrow for our beloved deceased?
Q. When there is so much good to remember, what part of human nature forces us to completely ignore everything but the fact that a person has died and subsequently wallow in that sadness for a significant period of time? PS. This question is not related to a personal loss of mine, yet. But your affection is kind.

A. I think (I am not expert, I can't be sure)... I think it's because you know you won't be seeing that person anymore. No more second chance with him/her, no more hugging, laughing together... no more saying hi, good morning, how've you been? or, no more laughter or joy and new memories to be make... You don't know if you will be seeing him/her again, you don't even know if heaven/hell/place after death exist >_<... I guess that's what make you sad when someone you loved passed.

Dictionary of Burning Words of Brilliant Writers (1895)

Reported in Josiah Hotchkiss Gilbert, Dictionary of Burning Words of Brilliant Writers (1895).

  • God gives us power to bear all the sorrows of His making; but He does not give us power to bear the sorrows of our own making, which the anticipation of sorrow most assuredly is.
  • Most of the Beatitudes which the Infinite Compassion pronounced have the sorrows of earth for their subject, but the joys of earth for their completion.
  • Sorrow is only one of the lower notes in the oratorio of our blessedness.
    • Adoniram Judson Gordon, p. 555.
  • How fast we learn in the day of sorrow! Scripture shines out in a new effulgence; every verse seems to contain a sunbeam, every promise stands out in illuminated splendor; things hard to be understood become in a moment plain.
  • Has it never occurred to us, when surrounded by sorrows, that they may be sent to us only for our instruction, as we darken the cages of birds when we wish to teach them to sing?
    • Jean Paul Richter, p. 556.
  • When we feel how God was in our sorrows, we shall trust the more blessedly that He will be in our deaths.
  • It is not in the bright, happy day, but only in the solemn night, that other worlds are to be seen shining in their long, long distances. And it is in sorrow — the night of the soul — that we see farthest, and know ourselves natives of infinity, and sons and daughters of the Most High.
