From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An infection is the detrimental colonization of a host organism by a foreign species. In an infection, the infecting organism seeks to utilize the host's resources to multiply, usually at the expense of the host. The infecting organism, or pathogen, interferes with the normal functioning of the host and can lead to chronic wounds, gangrene, loss of an infected limb, and even death. The host's response to infection is inflammation. Colloquially, a pathogen is usually considered a microscopic organism though the definition is broader, including parasites, fungi, viruses, prions, bacteria, and viroids. A symbiosis between parasite and host, whereby the relationship is beneficial for the former but detrimental to the latter, is characterised as parasitism. The branch of medicine that focuses on infections and pathogens is infectious disease. "When infection attacks the body, anti-infective drugs can help turn the tide of battle. Four types of anti-infective drugs exist: antibacterial, antiviral, antitubercular, and antifungal. Many individuals develop a variety of infections but quickly overcome them. However, some individuals develop chronic or persistent infections. In the majority of cases, persistent infections are caused by viruses and not bacteria. The common viruses that can cause chronic infection include measles, hepatitis, various prion infections that affect the brain (mad cow), herpes, infectious mononucleosis and Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Bacteria can also cause chronic infections in individuals with diabetes, those with compromised immunity and in individuals who smoke. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Is a urinary tract infection curable at home? Q. I recently contracted UTI (less than 24 hours ago), but I really don't have time to go to a store any time soon and purchase the antibiotics/pills. I read on several other websites that drinking plenty of water and Vitamin C will help with the infection. If I do these things or try other home remedies, will it cure the infection, or do I have to pay a visit to the pharmacy to get rid of it? How soon do I have to cure it before it gets serious? Asked by Celine Park - Tue Feb 16 19:12:22 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. you cannot cure a UTI with over the counter drugs. UTI's are caused by bacterial infection and the ONLY way to get rid of this type of infection is to take antibiotics. My cat has a bladder infection, diagnosed by a vet three days ago. He is on antibiotics and just took the 4th dose of 14 (two weeks), but I just found that he peed on a pillow in our living room. Is this normal or should he be using the litter box by now? Asked by smilegrl623 - Mon Jan 14 18:07:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Antibiotics will clear up any infection and won't necessarily affect his litterbox behavior at all. Hopefully when he is out of pain and the crystals are not hurting him anymore he will become a "good boy" again. Answered by old cat lady - Mon Jan 14 18:17:08 2008 How prevalent is yeast infection and what is it?
Q. I would like to know what yeast infection is, whether it is the same thing as candidas. Also what percentage of women develop it. Asked by aristotlelus - Sat Mar 7 05:45:01 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. A yeast infection is a imbalance in the good bacteria in the vagina. Yeast infections can appear on other parts of the body, like under breasts, in the fold of arms, under arms, or anywhere that skin touches skin and the bacteria gets out of balance. It is the same type infection as candida. I think all women develop yeast at some time in their life. Women can pass this infection to their male partners which are mostly asymptomatic but can transfer it back to her. hope this helps..
