What is causing this chronic pain in my lower abdomen?
Q. Every year, around this time, I get chronic pains in my lower abdomen, just below the belly button. This pain is accompanied by diarrhea and the pain is mild to moderate--depends on how my day is going or how it has gone. Please, help me figure out what could be causing this pain, and please, help me figure out any at-home-remedies that may stop the pain or ease it's passing.

A. What makes your question difficult to answer is the time of year factor. I don't know of anything in and of itself that would give you abdominal pain that is accompanied by or caused by the time of year. Are you changing your diet or activity level? Does the pain and diarrhea come at other times of the year also but not as bad? There has to be something else that is triggering this, I think. If you are having some strange reaction to the time of year, try getting the lamps that are recommended for people that become depressed due to the shortening of days. You need light that mimics natural sunlight, not just more lamps. You can find them if you do a search on seasonal affective disorder light or lamp. If that doesn't work, try… [cont.]

When does neck and back pain start to occur during pregnancy?
Q. When does the actual neck and back pain usually occur? I'm almost a month pregnant and I woke up this morning experiencing the worst back of my neck and back pain! I'm experiencing stiffness and sharp pains everytime I bend my head neck or back forward, even when I'm sitting down. Has any woman experienced this kind of back pain? When does back and neck pain usually start during pregnancy?

A. It could just be stress for you or you could have pulled a muscle. Since you are only a month pregnant, I wouldn't think that the neck and back pain was from pregnancy. A cause for neck and back pain is because of the increase in hormones which causes a shift in joints and can loosen ligaments which could cause posture to change and a less support for your back. Another reason is once you become bigger and actually have a pretty big belly, your center of gravity will change and this causes a different posture that your body isn't used to., which over time will cause pain. Also when the baby becomes bigger and you start to gain more weight, your back has to support more weight in a different area than it's used to. Ever carry a heavy… [cont.]

What type of pain killers are usually prescribed for post operative pain relating to inguinal hernia repair?
Q. What type of pain killers are usually prescribed for post operative pain relating to inguinal hernia repair? Also, what type of pain should a 23 year old otherwise healthy male expect from inguinal hernia repair surgery? Thanks!

A. What you are prescribed for postoperative pain depends completely on the doctor. You may get anything from prescription-strength ibuprofen (600mg or 800mg tablets), weak opioids (codeine, propoxyphene), medium-strength opioid (hydrocodone), or stronger opioids (oxycodone, hydromorphone, morphine). You will most likely get one of the following: * Tylenol with codeine * Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet, or Norco (hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Tylenol)) * Percocet (oxycodone with acetaminophen (Tylenol)) * Percodan (oxycodone with aspirin) * Combunox (oxycodone with ibuprofen) Those are the most commonly prescribed medications for acute postoperative pain. The pain should not be severe as it is not a major surgery. Pain medications with… [cont.]

A. If the pain comes after eating, I'd say it's more likely a gallbladder issue and not a liver issue. This is definitely something to speak to your PCP about or a gastroenterologist if you have one already. A HIDA scan w/ CCK was the ONLY test that showed the disease and they ran several on me (including a gallbladder ultrasound w/ cck) Good luck! *** Gallstones - Symptoms The most common symptom of gallstones is pain in the stomach area or in the upper right part of the belly, under the ribs. A. The other posters r correct, any kind of pain med really does thin the blood, as does alcohol, which can lead to u bleeding extensively while ur getting it done. Not only would this be dangerous for u, but also hella messy for the tattooist and might cause complications with the job being done properly. Have u asked about any kind of numbing cream or gel? i used this when i had my lower back tat finished, i was unable to handle the pain the first time i went for the outline, so had the cream put on to get it finished. This cream doesnt completely numb the area, but does make it a little more bearable i think. You would have to pay extra for this and the one that i used, i had to go there an hour earlier to get it put on, wait till it… [cont.]

What causes throbbing pain that originates in neck but shoots into head and eye?
Q. I have a sharp pain in my neck that seems to "shoot" into my head. It's like a mixture between a sinus headache and neck pain, but only on the right side of my head. I have been in pain for more than 2 weeks. I thought it would go away, but I don't even know what kind of doctor to go to.
Asked by NDG - Fri Oct 9 08:51:45 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It could be a tension headache, but the neck pain worries me. I'll give you some warning signs to look for: Pain behind the eye Dilated pupils Behavior changes Inability to focus What you could classify as the "worst headache of your life" These are symptoms of a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, which is extremely life-threatening. An aneurysm that has not ruptured can cause pain, slurred speech, confusion, certain stroke symptoms... If this pain has been going on for two weeks, I would definitely go to the emergency room to get a CT scan. Headaches can be benign, or they can be killers. You have what is characterized as a secondary headache, meaning that it may be organic in origin. Colin B. (M.D, PhD) Internal Medicine

What pain medications are most effective for migraines and cluster headaches?
Q. I either have 2 autoimmune conditions or one systemic one. The verdict is still out. Anyway, I have severe stomach pain and also eye pain and horrible headaches that feel like a cluster headache. Maybe they are a really bad migraine. I am not sure. What medications, specifically in the opiate family, would be most appropriate? Which one would you ask for if given the choice?

A. I also have a chronic health problem and with it, severe headaches. I have tried everything from opiates to seizure-control meds (no, I don't have seizures!) to a couple others specifically for migtraines and had no luck until recently. Maxalt MLT 10 mg has worked like a miracle drug for me ! It dissolves under your tongue in a few seconds and works on the headache within 10-15 minutes ! ...A Godsend !

What is Chronic pain and do I fit into the classification?
Q. I've had headaches everyday for 6 years and I'm not sure what kind of headaches they are and neither does my neurologist. The levels of pain vary everyday. They are kind of a mixture of migraines, tension headaches and sinus headaches. I was just wondering if I could call that chronic pain.

A. Chronic pain is continuous pain affecting the same area every day. Yes, you do fit into that classification.

A. Quit sitting for long periods of time! consider your shoes, maybe get some foot supports to put in your shoes. make sure your shoes have good foot support. Massage your feet, not to hard but it can help. STRECH your feet! do a warm up(not a warm up on your feet, prolly a laying down warm up) for 5min until u break a sweat, then strech your body, exspecially your feet, for 15mins. dont do any jumping or running or anything that causes your feet to hurt more. AND Dont sit for long times, maybe your in school..but get up during each class and do what ya gotta do if it makes you feel better. u prolly ddid injure that ankle, just be real easy with it, so it can heal, keep ice on it 24-7 duck tape ice on it over clothes all day and night, if u… [cont.]

What should I do about pain in a tooth with a temporary crown?
Q. I had the temporary crown put in last week, and it will be in place for 3 weeks while I am waiting for the permanent crown to be made. I started having toothache type pain in this tooth 3 days after the procedure. Tylenol and Alleve completely resolve the pain, but I have to take it on schedule, or the pain returns. Do I need to call my dentist? What will he do?

A. Yes, call the dentist. It is normal to have sensitivity with a temporary crown if the tooth has not previously had a root canal but you shouldn't be having a great deal of pain. Also, if you had the crown done last week then that's 4 weeks it's taking for the permanent crown to come back in from the lab... that's insane... it generally takes no more than 2 weeks.
