Prose is the most typical form of language. The English word 'prose' is derived from the Latin prōsa, which literally translates as 'straight-forward.' While there are critical debates on the construction of prose, its simplicity and loosely defined structure has led to its adoption for the majority of spoken dialogue, factual discourse as well as topical and fictional writing. It is commonly used, for example, in literature, newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, broadcasting, film, history, philosophy and many other forms of communication.

How do I write a Schaffer style prose analysis essay?
Q. I've searched this on all the search engines I know, but I can't seem to find anything. This is for my AP English Language class. It's the standard structure of prose analysis for the AP English exam. I only remember it has basic block of 2 tone words for diction, detail, syntax. If anyone has more detailed information about the structure of this essay, please tell me. Thanks.

Are there any crime fiction prose stylists comparable to James Ellroy?
Q. Having recently finished the complete published works of James Ellroy, I'm having difficulty going back to reading crime fiction with merely pedestrian prose. I was wondering are any writers in the genre who are as much prose stylists as he is.

A. You might try Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley) or James M. Cain (The Postman Always Rings Twice), possibly Jim Thompson. Their styles are different, but well worth sampling if you enjoy Ellroy. Another excellent crime writer, if you like the British take on these things, is P. D. James.
