- Resolution (logic) In mathematical logic and automated theorem proving, resolution is a rule of inference leading to a refutation theorem-proving technique for sentences in propositional logic and first-order logic. In other words, iteratively applying the resolution rule in a suitable way allows for telling whether a propositional formula is satisfiable and for, a rule of inference used for automated theorem proving
- Resolution (law) A resolution is a written motion adopted by a deliberative body. The substance of the resolution can be anything that can normally be proposed as a motion. For long or important motions, though, it is often better to have them written out so that discussion is easier or so that it can be distributed outside of the body after its adoption. An, a written motion adopted by a deliberative body
- Resolution (debate), the statement which is debated in policy debate
- Resolution (music) Resolution in western tonal music theory is the "need" for a sounded note and/or chord to move from a dissonance to a consonance (a more final or stable sounding one), a technique in music theory
- Resolution (meter), the replacement of one longum with two brevia
- New Year's resolution A New Year's resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year's Day and remain until fulfilled or abandoned. More socio-centric examples include, a commitment that an individual makes at New Year's Day
- Chiral resolution Chiral resolution in stereochemistry is a process for the separation of racemic compounds into their enantiomers. It is an important tool in the production of optically active drugs. Other terms with the same meaning are optical resolution and mechanical resolution, a process in stereochemistry for the separation of racemic compounds into their enantiomers
- Resolution, a Douglas DC-6 aircraft, BCPA Flight 304 British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines Flight 304 was a Douglas DC-6B, named Resolution and registered VH-BPE, on a flight from Sydney, Australia, to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada, with scheduled stops at Nadi (Fiji), Canton Island, Honolulu and San Francisco. It crashed during its initial approach towards San Francisco International, which crashed near San Francisco in 1953
Measurement Resolution
- Display resolution, the level of information on a display device, such as a monitor
- Temporal resolution Temporal resolution refers to the precision of a measurement with respect to time. Often there is a tradeoff between temporal resolution of a measurement and its spatial resolution. This tradeoff can be attributed to the finite speed of light and the fact that it thus takes a certain time for the photons carrying information to reach the observer, the sampling frequency of a digital audio device
- Optical resolution The ability of a lens to resolve detail is usually determined by the quality of the lens but is ultimately limited by diffraction. Light coming from a point in the object diffracts through the lens aperture such that it forms a diffraction pattern in the image which has a central spot and surrounding bright rings, separated by dark nulls; this, the capability of an optical system to distinguish find, and/or record details
- Angular resolution Angular resolution or 'spatial resolution' describes the resolving power of any image-forming device such as an optical or radio telescope, a microscope, a camera, or an eye, the capability of an optical or other sensor to discern small objects
- Spectral resolution The spectral resolution or resolving power of a spectrograph, or, more generally, of a frequency spectrum, is a measure of its power to resolve features in the electromagnetic spectrum. It is usually defined by, the capability of an optical system to distinguish different frequencies
- Sensor resolution, the smallest change a sensor can detect in the quantity that it is measuring
- Resolution (electron density), the quality of an X-ray crystallography data set
- Resolution (mass spectrometry) In mass spectrometry, resolution is a measure of the ability to distinguish between two peaks of different mass-to-charge ratio, m/z, in a mass spectrum. There are several ways to define resolution in mass spectrometry, therefore it is important to report the method used to determine mass resolution when reporting its value the ability to distinguish peaks in a mass spectrum
- Image resolution Image resolution describes the detail an image holds. The term applies to digital images, film images, and other types of images. Higher resolution means more image detail, a measure of the amount of detail in an image
- Printing resolution, the number of individual dots a printer can produce within a unit of earth (e.g., dots per inch Dots per inch is a measure of spatial printing or video dot density, in particular the number of individual dots that can be placed within the span of one linear inch (2.54 cm.) The DPI value tends to correlate with image resolution, but is related only indirectly)
Business
- Corporate resolution, a legal document defining which individuals are authorized to act on behalf of a corporation
- Resolution plc, a defunct major manager of in-force UK life funds acquired by Pearl Group in 2008
- Resolution Limited, a Guernsey-based investor in insurance companies
- Resolution Copper Resolution Copper is a joint venture owned by Rio Tinto and BHP, formed to develop and operate an underground copper mine on its property at Superior, Arizona. The project targets a deep-seated porphyry copper deposit located under the now inactive Magma Mine. The mining method planned to be used is block caving, a copper mining project in near Superior, Arizona
Geography
- Resolution Island (Nunavut), in the Arctic region of Canada
- Resolution Island, New Zealand Resolution Island is the largest (uninhabited) island in Fiordland, in the southwest of New Zealand. It is the country's fifth largest island. Resolution Island is separated from the mainland of the South Island by Dusky Sound and Breaksea Sound
