An external stye (pronounced /ˈstaɪ/) or hordeolum (/hɔrˈdiːələm/) is an infection of the sebaceous glands of Zeis at the base of the eyelashes, or an infection of the apocrine sweat glands of Moll. External styes form on the outside of the lids and can be seen as small red bumps. Internal styes are infections of the meibomian sebaceous glands lining the inside of the eyelids. They also cause a red bump underneath the lid with only generalized redness and swelling visible on the outside. Styes are similar to chalazia, but tend to be of smaller size and are more painful and usually produce no lasting damage. Styes are characterized by an acute onset and usually short in duration (7-10 days without treatment) compared to chalazia that are chronic and usually do not resolve without intervention.

What is the fastest way to get rid of a stye?
Q. I got a stye yesterday and my eyelid is swollen and eye is extremely red and feels like there is something like an eyelash in it, although there's not. I've been putting a warm cloth on it, but it hasn't helped. I really need to get rid of it by tomorrow. Any suggestions?

A. Ouch! I just had one myself. A warm compress is the only thing I know to do. They really just have to run their course.

How exactly does putting a hot compress of your eye help to remove a stye?
Q. what does the heat do to get rid of it? I read that it "softens" the stye...but i dnt really understand what that means...im curious

A. The heat does help reduce some of the swelling but the best way I've heard it described is to think of the stye as similar to grease and at room temperature it may be solid and harder but with increased heat it liquifies somewhat. This helps the stye begin to dissolve.

How to prevent a stye from coming back?
Q. I can feel a stye coming on how do I get it from not coming?
Asked by LoveLife<3 - Wed Sep 24 22:06:21 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can try to always clean your face! Make sure to wash off all makeup and anything else around the eyes. Dont rub your eyes if you touch something with dust or anything thats dirty. If you do have a stye, boil some WARM water and put it on a washcloth and put it to your eye. You can also go to the eye doctor and they can prescribe you some eyedrops that help also. What helps me to prevent styes are some eyelid scrubs from cvs and i wash my eyelids after i wake up and before i go to bed here is what the eyelid scrubs look like I really hope this helps
